MCP made by INGOAMPT

MCP made by INGOAMPT · Reference Checker

Catch citation errors before you submit.

AI can invent a paper that sounds real, or mix a real title with the wrong authors, year, venue, or pages. That is a citation hallucination. INGOAMPT Reference Checker helps you compare those details with published records from inside ChatGPT.

Built for PhD students, supervisors, professors, and research groups.

Is the checker online?

Checking service availability…

Local checks need the INGOAMPT computer to be online.

What does “local” mean?

The DBLP snapshot and checker run on INGOAMPT’s personal Mac, not on your computer. ChatGPT sends the references you select through the INGOAMPT server to that Mac. You don’t install DBLP or download anything.

When to email: If the badge says offline, paused, or unavailable after refreshing, and you want to try a local check, email email@ingoampt.com with your preferred time and time zone. If it’s available, you can proceed without emailing.

01 / How it works

From a bibliography to evidence.

MCP means Model Context Protocol. It is a standard that lets an AI application call an external tool. Here, ChatGPT uses MCP to send your citations to INGOAMPT Reference Checker and bring the evidence back into your conversation. The plugin is the entry you add in ChatGPT; the MCP server is the service it connects to.

1

Look up the work

Paste references into a chat and select the plugin. The checker searches its local DBLP snapshot for the cited paper and publication version, even when some fields differ. It compares the fields that the evidence supports.

2

Search when needed

When the match or an important field is unresolved, the checker asks ChatGPT to use Search if available. Look for a publisher, proceedings, a DOI record, or another authoritative source. The response labels web findings separately.

3

Review the correction

For each reference, look for the source, the field checked, the value you supplied, and any supported correction. If Search is unavailable or the evidence is inconclusive, the result should say what remains unverified.

A local miss does not mean the paper is fabricated. A record may be newer than the snapshot, outside DBLP’s coverage, or a different version of the same work. A citation check also cannot tell whether a paper supports the claim you cite it for.

02 / Sources and coverage

What is DBLP, and when does this help more?

DBLP is a curated computer science bibliography. It helps you find publications, authors, and venues. Our local copy is a snapshot, so it may lag behind the live site.

Use DBLP directly when you want to browse a researcher’s publications or look up one known title in the current index. Use the checker when you have a list and want to see which fields in your citations disagree with the records. It adds comparison, source links, and Search follow-up inside the chat. DBLP is one of its evidence sources.

What to send

  • Best fit: computer science conference and journal references, especially with a title, author, year, and venue or DOI.
  • Often needs Search: newer publications, papers outside computer science, and works absent from the snapshot.
  • Needs extra care: incomplete citations, similar titles, preprints versus published versions, and fields missing from the source.

03 / Illustrated setup

Add the checker to your ChatGPT.

Use ChatGPT on the web with a plan or workspace that allows custom MCP servers. The dark panels below reproduce the relevant screens with the final values filled in. Copy the settings here and enter them in ChatGPT.

  1. Open the setup dialog

Go to ChatGPT → Plugins, choose Add, then Add custom MCP server. If that option is missing, check your account or workspace permissions before continuing.

  5. Try two references in a new chat

Click Try in chat, or start a chat, type @, and select INGOAMPT Reference Checker. Paste the example below.

Check these two references with INGOAMPT Reference Checker. Start with local DBLP. If a reference or field is unresolved, use Search when available. For each entry, show the field, my value, the supported correction, and the source. Say what you could not verify.

04 / Questions and answers

Before you connect

Why do I need to sign in to INGOAMPT?

You can read this guide and see the status without an account. To run a check, the service uses your INGOAMPT account to give you access to your own results and apply your usage limits on a shared computer. The “None and OAuth” label describes the public status tool and the signed-in tools together. For checks, use OAuth.

Do I check references here or inside ChatGPT?

Inside ChatGPT. This website explains the product, shows whether the Mac is accepting checks, and gives you the setup values. You do not paste references on this page.

What if the checker is offline or I hit a limit?

Check the availability badge. If local checks are unavailable and you want to try them, email email@ingoampt.com for a time. If ChatGPT can Search on its own, a web-only check can still help, but it should clearly say that DBLP was not checked. Account allowance and shared capacity are separate from whether the Mac is online.

Can this tell me a reference is fake?

It can show a supported mismatch or explain that a reference could not be verified. An inconclusive search or a missing DBLP entry alone is not enough to call a paper fake. Check the cited source, including the version, before changing your bibliography.

Can I check books, medical papers, or recent preprints?

You can try. Coverage is strongest for indexed computer science papers. Give the most complete citation you have, including a DOI, ISBN, or arXiv ID when available. Other disciplines and new works may depend on Search and the records it finds. An arXiv year and a conference year may both be valid for different versions.

Is there a public ChatGPT plugin or MCP release?

This is an early-access custom setup. If enough researchers, supervisors, and groups find it useful and support the project, we plan to prepare a public MCP offering and submit a ChatGPT plugin for review. There is no release date or approval yet. Tell us how you would use it.

Why don’t I see Add custom MCP server, or why did sign-in fail?

Start on the ChatGPT website and check whether your plan or workspace allows custom MCP servers. If the option is there, check the full server URL, the client ID, and the default scope against the guide. For INGOAMPT registration or connection errors, email us with the error text. Leave out passwords, codes, tokens, and unpublished citations.

05 / Privacy and data use

What happens to the references you send?

Local checking

ChatGPT sends selected reference details to INGOAMPT. The site relays the job to the personal Mac for comparison with DBLP. Access to queued results is tied to your INGOAMPT account. Results in the checker expire 15 minutes after submission; your ChatGPT history and any copies you save follow their own settings.

Search and your choices

When ChatGPT uses Search, citation terms may be sent as search queries. The checker’s optional Crossref discovery is separate and sends unresolved citation details to Crossref only if you request it. Start with public citation details and leave out confidential material. You can disconnect the plugin in ChatGPT settings.
